Red Light Therapy- Does it Work?

Recently a female client of mine in Manhattan Beach, was telling me she booked a red light therapy appointment for sore muscles following some of our training sessions. Always on the cusp of the latest developments in reverse aging her body and health, and myself having tried red light therapy to accelerate the healing of a skin injury I had suffered awhile ago, I decided to take a quick dive into the topic of RLT for my clients.

Red light therapy is a form of therapy that uses low-level wavelengths of red light to promote healing and reduce pain. There is evidence to suggest that red light therapy may be effective for a variety of conditions, including skin issues, joint pain, and depression.

Research has shown that red light therapy can promote wound healing by increasing circulation and reducing inflammation. It may also improve skin conditions such as acne, sun damage, to improve skin tone, hair loss, psoriasis, and eczema. In addition, red light therapy may be effective for reducing joint pain, muscle soreness, and stiffness associated with conditions like osteoarthritis or strenuous exercise. 10-20 sessions, 3-5 times per week would be sufficient to effectively improve your condition after 4-6 weeks.

Red light therapy has also been studied as a treatment for depression, and some research suggests that it may be helpful for improving mood and reducing anxiety, stress and depression. There are many modalities to receive red light therapy, from light beds one lays in, to entire rooms or booths one steps into, to face masks, hand held wands or helmets for facial skin and scalp only.

While more research is needed to fully understand the benefits and potential risks of red light therapy, the available evidence suggests that it may be a safe and effective treatment option for a variety of conditions. However, it's important to talk to your healthcare provider before trying red light therapy, especially if you have any underlying health conditions or are taking medications that could interact with the treatment.
